The Property Council of Australia’s Innovation & Excellence Awards were celebrated on Saturday 19 June. The Sydney Harbour YHA was awarded a high commendation in the category of Heritage and Adaptive Use.
Altus Page Kirkland’s Sydney office provided full Cost Management services and reported to the financier throughout the construction phase of the project.
The Sydney Harbour YHA is a key development with strong Australian historical significance as it was built on ‘The Dig Site’ on Cumberland and Gloucester Streets in Sydney, where the country’s early convict settlers resided. It features budget accommodation and a ‘hands on’ archaeological educational experience for visitors. The project comprises a 106 bedroom YHA youth hostel in two separate three-storey buildings that are linked via a bridge suspended over Cribbs Lane and a separate education centre. To preserve and showcase the archaeological remains, the YHA is raised off the ground on pillars and suspended approximately one storey above the remains. The property has welcomed over 17,000 guests since opening late in 2009.
The Heritage and Adaptive Use category of the Innovation & Excellence Awards was a highly competitive one, with 16 contestants including the QVB, Sydney Town Hall, GPO Perth and Intercontinental Melbourne redevelopment. The overall winner of the category was the Good Shed North in Victoria, owned by the Grollo Group.
Congratulations to all involved with the project.
